Bavarian bier and gorgeous goths

I had a FABULOUS birthday, thanks for asking.

Started on Thursday when I went to dinner with the family at the Sofitel Wentworth's Garden Court restaurant. They do a French cuisine menu, so I ate nicoise and five-cheese pizza followed by a cassoulet of duck and then chocolate fondant + three types of wine. All paid for by my bro. Cecilia was particularly well-behaved and cute, so that was a bonus.

Then on Friday night I went to the Monsieur Camembert secret show at QIRKZ, which is a warehouse in Marrickville filled to brim with bohemian ephemera - frontman Yaron Hallis' collection of cool stuff.

I was with Dina and Dina's partner's sister Darielle, then met Faun inside. Faun, it turned out, has a friend who's an auctioneer and quite good friends with Yaron. At the end of the night we were outside chatting and she and her friends were sharing a spliff with the birthday boy. Oh yeah. I started the singing of 'Happy Birthday'.

That was cool. What wasn't cool was the lack of trains back to the city. I ended up scoring a taxi (luckily, actually), which I caught to Town Hall, and then caught the last train to Waverton.

The next morning I had to prise myself out of bed for the SWF volunteer's orientation. Fortunately I was with Sofia, who was happy to take charge and just let me chip in every now and again with supporting remarks.

I was really tired and dressed completely inappropriately (vollie t-shirt over a denim mini skirt, fishnet tights and knee-high boots) but the best part was that I didn't care. Because it was (almost) my birthday.

After the orientation I had a coffee with some of the other supervisors and then one of them was kind enough to drop me near Wynyard for my lunch at the Bavarian Bier Cafe. Assie was already there and Sir and I walked in at the same time. Others trickled in around 1:30pm. I think I did pretty well to talk to everyone.

Lots of people I haven't seen in a while, so that was good. We even ordered a 'metre of schnapps' (I got two shots), which sat well with my two lychee beers.

I booked a karaoke room for 5:30pm but by the time we got there it was 5:45pm and they'd given it away so I put a deposit on for a room at 7pm and we went to the Edinburgh Castle Pub for an hour and a bit. Cecilia, the chick I met in Kyoto, came by and said hello and had a chat.

When we got to KMix it was on the dot of 7pm and they told us we were 10 mins EARLY, which meant they gave our room away when we were only 5 mins late, the bastards. So we had to wait around for 10 mins but we finally got in and belted out two hours worth of hits and not-so hits. (Cecilia got the first song because she had to go to a dinner but after that it was me, Gla, Ass, Ness, Rusty and Ness' posse: Pape, Scott and Sue).

After finishing up at KMix Ass and Gla had to go so it was pretty much me and Ness' posse. Scott invited us to a goth party with pre-goth drinks at Paddy Maguire's where I somehow acquired a salt shaker having drunk a pint of Guinness and a schooner of Toohey's Old.

We then went to the club via Harry's Cafe de Wheels (do you know they sell mash and gravy in a cup for $1.20?). The club was near Central. I reckon it was on Mary St but I don't know the name. Actually, I just Googled Mary St goth night and 'Tailors on Central' came up and that sounds right. I found out they only do goth night once a month, though.

So Ness and I attempted to play pool, only she sunk the black on her second shot so we were only pretending to play thereafter. Being my birthday night out I had all my drinks paid for me by various members of the group. Must thank them if I can remember who bought...

Met some very well-dressed goths out on the smoking balcony. If I remember correctly, there was Devo (who was absolutely gorgeous - he danced with me later on), Rachel, Hulien, Sue and Freak.

Thrashed around on the dance floor for a couple of hours (some of it with Devo), saw something I didn't want to in a McDonald's bathroom, caught a taxi and got home at 4am. Actually, there was a moment when I thought I'd lost my wallet (or it had been stolen) but it had merely fallen between my seat and the door of the cab. It is such a relief to find out you still have your wallet with money, cards and ID intact.

Yesterday, which was my actual birthday, I slept until 1pm, watched '40 Year Old Virgin', rang my mum to say Happy Mother's Day and then went for a swim. Happy birthday mission accomplished.

That's all the fun stuff. Below is reality. I've quarantined it so you don't need to read it if you don't want to.

[Don't know what I'm doing any more. Feel like I'm in so deep editorial shit because I am SO FRICKIN' FAR BEHIND with my copy (I'm talking WEEKS... okay, one week) but I just do not have the time to catch up.

Besides which, I have reclaimed my nights and weekends and have steadfastly refused to do any work at home. Until tonight. Which is great in theory but actually just means I fret about how I'm going to get everything done in time.]
