Birthday/night

I've decided to hang it with the small gatherings and have invited everyone that I know will be in Sydney on the 9th May to celebrate my birthday with me at the Bavarian Bier Cafe. I love beer halls. They are extremely conducive to large gatherings and quaffing.

I have also invited everyone I know to a night gathering at QIRKZ, which is a secret venue in Marrickville (that I don't even know the address of yet) for an intimate Monsieur Camembert show. I'm not sure whether I mentioned, but it's Yaron Hallis' birthday show and he told me he has the same birthday as me, so it'll be cool. However, no one wants to/can come except Cecilia, a girl I met in Kyoto (told you I invited everyone I know) because they're all coming to quaff in the day.

So, the last week has been a mixed bag. After I spent Monday feeling down about things that were beyond my control, I got an email from the animal psychic about Chi'na who told me she died of an inoperable cancer that caused her some breathing difficulties. The psychic also mentioned Scruffy, my other dog, and the fact that both of them sometimes hang around 'another female relative with whom they were close' (ie my sister). I didn't mention anything about Scruffy or my sister.

Even more disturbing was the fact that she said I'd meet my soul mate within two years and have kids within 18 months of meeting him. I presume my soul mate is a he, considering the kids. I'm not really planning to adopt or go after a sperm donor. I'm not really all that desperate about having kids. Or maybe I will be in four years.

Anyway. In less than two weeks I will be 28. If I'm not a mother by 32, it was all lies.

Work totally sucks at the moment. I'm not yet behind in one mag, but it looks like I will be, and it's touch and go whether the other mag will turn out how I want. In addition to that, the boss is hounding me to take over the online version of one mag and I simply don't have the time right now, am struggling to even do my regular job. This I have told him but even after offering me a new computer (mine's slow for the back end web work) and being nice to me, he's still hounding and that's the problem. I wish he'd given me some notice so I could at least plan my time more than a week in advance.

Still, I had a decent weekend. Met up with some high school friends for breakfast on Anzac Day at Cafe Ish. Was disappointed that after the gingerbread gimps for Mardi Gras they didn't have a Digger version for Anzac Day. I then waded through the city throng and caught a bus to The Oaks at Neutral Bay for Manfred's birthday.

Manfred is a guy I met at TAFE last year. His wife Emese is a masseuse so I have seen her more often than I've seen him in the last six months for appointments. They are absolute darlings and I always walk away from an appointment with Emese feeling content and relaxed. So met their friends and then moved on to Chatswood later that afternoon.

My goal was to buy a phone bug (microphone for recording phone interviews) and some vegetables. I managed neither. Instead I went to Aero Plus and bought a bday gift for Jo, who I saw that night (she invited me to her bday thing next week but I'm booked out) and then went to Myer and bought stockings cos they were on sale. Shame.

The evening was spent at the Lava Rooms in Ultimo. It's a 'tiki' venue hidden in a back alley behind Gallery Kuno and everyone takes the dress code seriously. So I went and bought cheap Hawaiian accessories, which included floral bra cups, a lei and a floral bracelet. Yes, I did wear the floral bra cups - but over a singlet top as it was cold.

Also wore a sarong and carried a ukulele, which I found made me very iconic at the venue: "You're the girl with the ukulele!" some girls chorused, although I was not holding the ukulele at the time while waiting in line for the sole ladies loo in the crowded bar.

Sunday was easy. Was going to to go swimming cos it looked warm outside but although it was sunny it was blowing a gale and absolutely freezing so I didn't leave the flat. Instead just pottered around online and fixed up some Japan photos.

Here's one of me and my niece:

We are waiting outside Jonathan's, a 'family restaurant' near Harajuku, for a table and I recall she was incredibly well behaved that day and only yelled once, later in the evening, when she wanted to be carried by Yuko.
