Playing the cards right

So pulled myself out of last week's hole. I've tidied my room so I can now walk from one side to the other without having to step over stuff. I took a look at my savings and found out I'm not badly off and won't run out of money anytime soon, though I did set up an auto-payment mechanism to try and whittle down my mortgage faster.

However, my salary is about to change: we have found a replacement and I will be going part-time in three weeks! Which means I need to find some lucrative part-time work pretty quickly... On the up side: new fridge! New sofa! Staircase! Time to write!

Pretty full week last week, mostly Sydney Film Festival sessions, plus the Dynamic Business relaunch party, and saw 'Circa' at the Opera House with Ness in tow.

Pick of the best movies: 'Boy' (hilarious NZ film about growing up; good cast, great comic timing), 'Wasted on the Young' (highly stylised Aussie school drama/thriller; a tad too long, but exceptional cast and interesting cinematographic choices) and 'Summer Wars' (Japanese anime that features three young heroes with the special skills of maths problem-solving, video-game fighting and Japanese card game hanafuda koi-koi).

The relaunch party was okay, a bit boring. I had to give up my ticket to see 'Uncle Boonmee' (Cannes-winning film) because I had accidentally booked it for the same evening. The best part was leaving, and I don't mean to say the party was terrible, just that leaving was a relief.

They had goodie bags and single roses in boxes from Roses Only so when I got outside I had to put all my stuff on a bench to sort out how I was going to carry it and got talking to a guy who was smoking there. Ended up giving him one of my two roses, a cupcake and a magazine in my grand benificence. He said his name was Michael and he looked a lot like Michael Dorman, the actor, but I didn't think to ask. Also met my vollie friend Anne on the train who said I didn't miss much by not seeing 'Uncle Boonmee' - "it was slow".

This weekend was pretty good. Mostly movies, but also giving blood on Saturday morning, shopping for a sofabed, a bit of writing and a lot of tidying up. It all helps. My Card Sharp acquaintance David came over and we played two-player games for about four hours.

I'm now polishing off a couple of transcripts (because it's so difficult to do them at work) and just discovered that Australia took a hammering from Germany in our opening match at the FIFA World Cup. Boo! Boo-urns!

This week: meeting with mortgage broker, meeting with a potential housemate, #prjournolove drinks, another Card Sharp session, Saturday afternoon at the symphony before seeing the parents (they're back from Canada, bearing gifts!). C'est ca.
