For some reason my left eye is being lazy and is having trouble focusing on things. But at least I have stopped crying due to Biminne. Though I have to stop gulping so many down - I did five a day for a couple of days (the instructions suggest 2-3 capsules twice a day after food) and they aren't cheap, like 50c a capsule or something.
The remedy, I reckon, proves that I had early hayfever rather than a cold. Given that my only two symptoms were a runny nose and watery eyes.
Anyway, so what did I do last week? Let me think.
I went to my first writers group meeting in ages. We held it at The Falconer this month because having it at the Clarendon on poker night was getting a bit much. Also last Wednesday was the State of Origin match so it would have been noisy and crowded and un-writerly anyway. I promised them I would get them two chapters by next meeting and I already have one chapter down so I'm ahead thus far and can certainly spend some hours on my novel this weekend.
On Thursday afternoon I felt a bit ill so I took myself home a little early, thinking I'd just rest up and be better the next day, but on Friday I couldn't pull myself out of bed so called in sick. Still had to phone into an editorial meeting for a client from home. Was very lucky to happen to wake up at 11:55am (the call was scheduled for noon), conduct the call and then eat 'breakfast'.
I was originally going to meet Ness at Circular Quay at 7pm to see the Kronos Quartet at the Opera House (at 8pm) but I knew she finished at 4pm so I called her and told her I could meet her earlier. We met at 4:30pm and went to see Brian Eno's 77 Million paintings at The Studio (Ness: "This would be so much better on acid"). It was like a screen saver, honestly.
Then we went to Young Alfred for dinner, saw the Kronos Quartet play electric fences (for they are hardcore, ya!), met them after the show signing merch and then had a hot choc at the Guylian Cafe. It was nice to spend a big chunk of time with just Ness, without trying to talk through a crowd.
So Saturday I spent mostly sleeping, then wrote an article (for I was on deadline, blast it - I can't rest, even when ill...).
Sunday I had lunch with (writing) Alison before going to see 'Yes Madam Sir' at the George St Greater Union, the first of my 10 Sydney Film Festival movies. Then I had to hike up to the Dendy Opera Quays for '$9.99' and hike back down to Geroge St for 'Van Diemen's Land'. Yup, three in a row. I made it, despite the tight times.
All three were good picks, actually, solid 4-star films. And very different too: 'Yes Madam Sir' was a doco about India's first female police officer, Kiran Bedi, '$9.99' a philosophical but humorous Australian animation, and 'Van Diemen's Land' a true story about cannibal convict Alexander Pearce.
And Queen's Birthday holiday Monday, when I last left you, I saw 'Bluebeard' in the afternoon. I got in late due to trackwork buses (or lack thereof) so had to sit in a seat that was at the very bottom, far left side of the cinema, which meant I craned my neck the whole 90 minutes and saw everything slightly skewed. It didn't help that it was in French so I was reading subtitles like that too.
When I got out I felt dizzy so went to Hyde Park, lay down and had a nap. Then had a late lunch at a Japanese joint and went wandering down to Chinatown trying to kill time before the Save FBi gig at The Metro.
The gig was really good, lots of emerging local bands but also more established musicians like Jack Ladder and Sarah Blasko (who was AMAZING - even with a short set was worth the ticket price alone. Can't wait for her new album).
Was amused to see Megastick Fanfare and Sherlock's Daughter have a lot of fun; they are possibly two of the cutest bands around at the moment. Also 'discovered' Fergus Brown, whose debut album I've just purchased. Truth be told I've heard his songs played on FBi before but didn't realise they were all his.
Since then I have walked the red carpet twice (both at the Australian premiere of 'Coraline' yesterday - to which I serendipitously had a 3D ticket - on account of buying a drink and then not being able to get through to the cinema from Easy Way so having to walk the red carpet a second time) and had a massage.
Oh yeah, and Teri Hatcher was at the premiere and delayed the movie by about 10 minutes. Which was okay because the SFF director did a short interview with her at the front of the cinema about laying down the voice tracks and it was actually interesting.
All right, it is now fiendishly cold so I am going to have a hot shower and go to bed.
