The spider returned, near to where we first saw it, only in a more reachable spot. I thought I had a shot at catching it so I procured a round takeaway container (and lid, v important), got a stable chair and went to catch it. Unfortunately it saw me coming (with that many eyes, I'm not surprised) and dropped onto the back of the computer desk and then settled under the hutch where the monitor sits.
I got a 60cm ruler to prod it into an open area (still intent on catching it) and it crawled around the computer desk. It should be on the outside of the unit. But it's not. It has completely disappeared. So I'm sitting crossed-legged on my chair typing this entry. There's nothing quite like a large spider you've just misplaced.
Note to self: use large rectangular takeaway container next time.
