Is this like the first time in ages I have actually been able to make my Monday post? Stranger things have happened. Like hiring someone terrific to take over two of your magazines and then having her poached by the ABC. Yes, that's what happened today. So we are STILL hiring for my replacement and I am STILL editing three magazines until that time.
Last Tuesday I spent putting out small fires, then went to the launch of the NSW Export Awards and introduced Jacqui to pretty much everyone I knew there as the new editor of 'Dynamic Export', something I need to undo at some point that I cannot bear to think about.
The week was pretty much doing Erin's work and finishing up on 'Giftrap' magazine, which is late, late, late, even by my standards, but how was I supposed to know we'd lose a writer AND an editor in the space of two weeks? And with me away for a week in Beijing it was never going to go on time. Need to call the client tomorrow and take the rap for everything...
Went to PRJournoLove at The Argyle on Thursday night and spent way too much money on cocktails. Add the fact that I felt I was coming down with something and incredibly tired from skimping on sleep for most of the week and it made for a limp Friday.
On Saturday, hauled myself out of bed at 8am to go to the Sydney Writers' Festival supervisors meeting at Walsh Bay (thanks to trackwork, it took about an hour instead of 40 minutes), survived that and then went to the Kinokuniya zine fair with one of the other vollie supers, Jonathan, but it wasn't that great and I couldn't even be bothered getting a free comic book.
Had to kill a few hours until dinner at the Lowenbrau and unfortunately spent most of them in World Square, primarily JB Hi-Fi where I sunk about $240. When it came dinner time it turned out they'd lost Alison's booking, then wouldn't let Ken (Gloria's flatmate, he also works with Matt and Alison) in because they thought he was under 18 and he didn't have ID on him. Long story short, we ended up at the Belgian Bier Cafe down the road, which was good, only they didn't have the Pure Bier Festival specials like the Lowenbrau.
At 9pm I peeled away and headed to 505, a jazz club in Surry Hills, for Jo's birthday drinks. I had a nap on the train and thought it'd be a slow night, but I was actually okay when I got to the club and made it until it closed, and got home just after midnight. She just landed a features editor position at 'Nett' magazine, which is 'Dynamic Business' biggest rival. It will be interesting to see what pans out.
Sunday I slept until noon and then went to see 'Iron Man 2' in Gold Class with Sir. The reason we went Gold Class was because I had to use the vouchers I got from my workmates for my birthday last year before they expired. Movie was good, but not as good as the first one where they tend to show how cool and smart Tony Stark is rather than focus on the shoot 'em up scenes. Cast was really good, though, especially Mickey Rourke and Sam Rockwell. I suppose that is the go for most sequels.
Today, as I mentioned, Jacqui resigned and I had a pretty cruisy one. Went to the launch of the Australian Fashion Exchange show (I interviewed the founder for my recent fashion story in 'Dynamic Export', hence the invite) but managed to escape pretty quickly.
New junior writer Jennifer Blake started today. Seems a solid bet - at last!
Anyway, I have an early one tomorrow morning so I gotta sign off, but just to let you know this week is CHOCKERS so expect a lengthy post next time.
