So, what did I do for two days?
I didn't end up going for a swim because it was STILL raining. I know it's an irony that I don't like getting wet on the way to and from the pool, but it's just uncomfortable, okay? Besides which, my cough hasn't cleared up so it would have been a respiratorially bad idea. Yes, I just made that word up, what's your point?
I've started reading Oliver James' 'Affluenza', which I am finding a bit hit and miss in terms of building a logical argument. The premise is that increased rates of depression and anxiety have derived from an increasingly vacuous, consumerist world. I don't disagree with this premise, but am finding it hard to reconcile the evidence he presents with wholly supporting the theory. Will let you know when I'm finished. I'm about a third of the way through.
Went to see 'Daybreakers', the Aussie vampire movie. Actually pretty good. Some parts were overdone (and, as much as I love her, Claudia Karvan's American accent is terrible) but as a whole it was well-paced, suitably blood-splatteringly over-gory, and tosses up some interesting ideas about humanity and sustainability and corporate greed. Also recalled that Skippy's ex, Rob Kelly, and his friend Dan Phillis worked on the visual effects (I remember talking to them about it like, TWO YEARS ago) so I now know people who exist on IMDb!
Today the new online editor, David, began. Nice guy, dry-humoured and geeky as you might expect. I had to field plenty of calls about my health. I ripped plenty of bandaids making lots of calls but didn't get very far on word count. But I did clear 155 emails from my inbox. Twas also my boss' birthday. And I finally got my hair cut.
What else..? Tomorrow I am meeting up with Rob (can't remember if I mentioned him) a writer I met in Newcastle during TINA. He's a married, fortysomething scientist who is writing a novel. We've exchanged the occasional email over the past few months and he's in Sydney for a few days, so we are having a bite after work before he has to go somewhere at 9pm. Not sure what we're going to talk about for a couple of hours. Writing, I suppose. Trying not to feel weird about meeting up with him. I've met his wife and everything so it's not like that, but everyone thinks it's weird.
