Too many meetings, not enough life

So Jen started this week and she's been pretty good so I'm happy about the way things are going on DB. My time this week has been eaten up by a number of meetings and media events that are supposed to mean something to me but don't.

I just went to Govinda's (cinema) and saw 'Into The Wild' and although I'm not likely to kill a moose anytime soon, it has made me crave a moment of silence and stillness and 'being in the moment' that will tell me which direction to take.

I don't want to be an editor (or two editors!) and I'm quite stubbornly opposed to doing what I do if it means I write less and I get paid the same, let's face it. I want to know, how do I win if I do less of what I like to do but don't get paid more to do it? I may as well swap places with Nukte (staff writer) as she gets to write 100% of the time, even if she's pulling in $12K less than me. Scratch that, I'm not sure I could live on $12K less.

I did go to a nice lunch on Friday, though. I was a guest of a lady from IP Australia, a contact I made late last year at a commercialisation seminar. She said the nicest thing to me; we were talking about it being the Year of the Rat and she turned to me and asked what star sign I was and I said 'Taurus and Rooster' and she said 'no wonder, I get along with both of those. I knew from the moment I met you that you were a nice person and I thought to myself, I have to invite her to our events'.

Yesterday I walked to Artarmon to go to the big Bunnings (if you recall, a couple of weeks ago I went to the Chatswood one and they didn't have my toilet doobie). I got horribly lost (ie realised I didn't know where it was) and ended up at the Officeworks instead. Fortunately a nice man there told me I wasn't far away and it was just down the highway and left at the next lights.

I walked out of Bunnings an hour later carrying a planter box, five small tubs of plants (strawberries, two lettuces, carrots and basil), two bags of potting mix, the toilet doobie and a short length of flyscreen. Yes, I realise that I already bought flyscreen a couple of weeks ago, but I had a brainwave while I was in there to staple the flyscreen to an old picture frame to make a rack for my dangly earrings, which are just not happy living in a small drawer.

A little bit poorer, I lugged the damn planter box and its contents up the hill to the bus stop and caught a bus to North Sydney and then had to lug it home. The walk usually takes 10 minutes but it took 15 and my biceps have been aching all today. All in all I hiked about 7km, which was not bad, and certainly worth the pizza I ate (Friday dinner/Saturday lunch).

So my afternoon was spent cleaning the balcony, which hasn't been cleaned for at least a year. There were two great piles of leaves that filled a couple of large shoeboxes and I had to sweep down the cobwebs from the balcony. I even washed the balcony panels and the door and windows. You can tell I did it because it's streaky (even with a squeegee I can't get it right, but at least it's not dusty). And then I replanted the plants in the planter box and added the tomato seedlings I accidentally germinated last week. Rocket isn't doing too well but won't be sharing the pot with six baby tomato plants so I'll see how it goes (and whether the planter box neighbours will all get along).

Then I made my earring rack, which sounded a lot easier in my head than it actually was. Firstly, the stapler wouldn't 'bite' the way I wanted it to so I ended up sticky-taping the edges of the flyscreen to the frame. There was only about 5mm on each edge so I didn't have a lot to work with. Then I stapled both the tape and the flyscreen to the frame. With much difficulty. And then I ran out of staples and took 5 minutes trying to figure out how to open the staple drawer of the stapler to refill it and then spilled all the refills on my bed. But I did it and the rack works and looks great.

And then today I woke up at 12 (3 hours after I was supposed to), did some work on a proposal that's due in tomorrow and then went to Govinda's as previously stated. Now I'm buying things on art.com because I found out yesterday that the print ('Babar et les ballons') that I wanted to buy at Hawk International Framing has been sold. Fortunately I found out that it costs less to buy it online and ship it here from the USA than buy it from them anyhow. Yay, I'm a homemaker. Next project: curtains.

This week, not much on except more meetings and a freelance event. It's a short week, though, because it's Anzac Day on Friday. I love Australia, land of the long weekend.
