This entry is about the doco I've been filming with my small crew. You can check out the 'official site' at FanbaseHQ.com. We put it up on Thursday in a lot of a rush because it took Pia ages to do the linework on the graphics. It will take Jess forever to add buttons and do it up properly and run a system that will support outsider's contributions. She's currently doing a crash course in technical things. I'm glad it isn't me.
So anyway, our first focus happens to be on Nine Inch Nails fans. Of the five of us (the other three being creative director Vanessa, Mike the cameraman and I), Vanessa is the only one who loves Nine Inch Nails. The Sydney concerts were scheduled for the 9th, 10th and 11th at Luna Park. We did well on Wednesday after a slow start, even getting the attention of a radio chick called Renee who does a show on Skidrow FM (a community radio station run out of Marrickville). Renee wants to interview Vanessa, which will enable us to get a free plug on air.
On Thursday, the gig was cancelled. Officially the line was that Trent Reznor (NIN frontman, for those who don't know) was sick, but there were rumours that he didn't like some technical detail at the venue. The boon for us was that we managed to capture a lot of disappointed fans who had nothing better to do than to talk to us, including a bunch of Spiral (fan club) memebers holding up their Year Zero flag.
On Friday, the gig remained cancelled. This ended up working in our favour in three ways. Number one was that Mike had already committed to other plans so I was to be the substitute cameraperson; number two was that because we didn't have Mike we didn't have the swish camera with boom mic he borrowed from college on the other days (Friday is the day Luna Park is open to the public to 11pm so it is particularly noisy); number three was that Vanessa couldn't talk due to bronchitis and the rest of us were looking forward to a good night's sleep.
We already have enough footage to edit a couple of small docos so we're not doing badly on that front. We're also going down to Canberra to interview some Canberrian fans on the 26th.
I should mention that I'm the producer of this whole shebang. I think I made Jess post up my title as General Purpose Glue ie the person who brings things together, makes decisions and sticks with them. I don't know what a producer does, really, I'm not trained in any media designed to move. But I'm guessing, from my role thus far, that it is to find out about stuff, give Vanessa options to pursue as well as keep track of how everything is going. And drive the Tarago down to Canberra.
