The Last Matriarch

My dad's mother died this morning. I think she was 89. As you can tell I wasn't very close to her, largely because she lived in Malaysia and I, here in Sydney, Australia. Also, she spoke only Hokkien and Mandarin and I speak only English, so there you go.

Nevertheless there is a strange feeling of loss that surrounds me, for she was the last of my grandparents to go. Yep, I now no long have any grandparents. She'll never see my brother get married, as she wished. But now there is no pandering to the matriarch, subduing the sibling infighting a little. Although no one can keep ten brothers and sisters from expressing their opinions loudly at one another for long...

RIP Ah-Mah, so sorry that I don't even know your real name.

My dad has gone to Malaysia for a couple of weeks. I'm currently the guardian of my mother, being the only child left in Sydney. Sigh. Love your mother.
