I woke up this morning at around 11am (although from about 7 onwards I could hear the trackwork machinery so my quality of sleep suffered a bit). I'd planned to do a few chores today, "Domestic Saturday", and then get stuck into writing - but you know what they say about the best laid plans. (Actually, I didn't know what they said about 'best laid plans' so I Googled it and it goes "The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry").
First of all, Sir decided she'd go home this weekend, therefore we had to postpone Domestic Saturday until tomorrow. Then I realised we didn't actually have any cleaning things, like gloves and brushes and sponges. And then I realised I hadn't bought the cleaning products. I'm on a bit of an enviro shift at the moment so I'm not using the dryer and instead of that commercial crap, I bought white vinegar, borax and sodium bicarb to make my own. AND THEN I REALISED that I'd left my freakin' USB drive at work, which has my latest novel scribblings on it.
Luckily, I remembered that Ben and Michael were talking about going in today. Our building is high on security - they lock the stairwell doors to individual floors at 6pm and you need a pass and the key to the office doors out of hours. This is a bitch for most. They really should have some sort of keycode system. Retina scan? Thumbprint entry? Anyway, so I texted Ben, whose number I procured last night for Sunday soccer purposes, and asked if he was actually going in. He confirmed he was in the office, so I took the bus to Chatswood (because of the trackwork, buses replace trains) and called him so he could let me up.
He's a quiet guy, is Ben. I asked him how he was feeling because I figured that he'd have a rather large hangover considering how much he drank last night, and for how long but he seemed okay, if a bit tired. I also made a comment about how much money he must have spent considering how many rounds he bought but he didn't seem to remember buying rounds. Then I asked him whether he ended up sleeping on the couch at Paul's place or whether he went home and he look confused (presumably because he forgot that he was put in a situation where he might have had the opportunity to couch-surf) and said he went home. He genuinely doesn't seem to remember anything past about 9pm! In retrospect, I'm surprised he didn't ask me 'how did you get my number?'.
He then asked what I left behind and I just said 'a USB drive with my novel on it' (which sounded pretentiously impressive). I said 'hi' to James Chen and we had a brief exchange about work because I asked him if he always worked Saturday (yes - because he is one of the only illustrators who does maths drawings). I also met Randall, who is the new audio guy. I actually saw him at lawn bowls yesterday but didn't have an opportunity to introduce myself. I was going to say goodbye to Ben out of politeness, but he'd disappeared so I just left and did some fruit and vege (and cleaning product) shopping.
Since I started this entry I've also been out to dinner at Una's on Broadway (a restaurant serving rustic German fare) with Ali, Ryan and Cat. I'm not entirely comfortable around those three but I still can't pinpoint why. Very tired. Will sleep now.
