Askew

This morning I headed out a bit later than usual and had to stop at the corner of Bay Road and Carr Street as a dozen fit, young, shirtless men jogged by, two abreast on the footpath. Some days you just get lucky.

Bit of a strange few days, though. On Friday V2 was supposed to "audition" for the company band but got a bit nervous as the afternoon wore on. I proposed that she sing to me and I would tell her the truth about whether or not she could sing. It was around 4:30pm and everyone was on the wane and mucking around. The sound room was free and all the media people were hanging around fighting about which songs to play on the sound system so we snuck in. V2 plugged in her iRiver and started belting out Christina Aguilera (she likes her songs and has the same range) (and has a good voice except when she hesitates with the words). Unbeknownst to me or her, the cheeky media bunch had turned off the music in the other room and turned on the mikes in the sound room, thus flooding the section with V2's karaoke. Luckily the reception was positive, even though she got really shy when she found out what had happened.

We went to the pub after that. I didn't get too pissed because I've decided to curb my drinking (I mean, I get stupider the more I drink so I reckon 2 or 3 will get me to the happy plateau and then I won't have to spend any more money) so I had a chat with Rod (soccer-playing pirate rocker Rod) about music and a larf with Jess and V1 about tattoos before V1 and I decided that we wanted coffee instead of alcohol and skedaddled, dropping Jess off at the station. We ended up having gelato rather than coffee, which was fun. Both the Vanessas are really cool to talk to. They're the same age (21) and they have both had pretty twisted lives, they listen well and they talk well. I love Vanessas!

On Sat'dy I dropped in at home because I knew my mum was by herself. Sir was driving home anyway so it worked out well. Turns out my mum has been seeing all her friends all week and hadn't had time to walk Chi'na so I took the ol' girl for a long walk round the ol' neighbourhood and then had lunch with my mum. And then ate ice cream. Mum dropped me off at the station because I was going to see Robert act in DRAMAC's Comedy Revue. Well, I went shopping at Macquarie Centre first; manchester, books and CDs, mainly. Big W have this funny system where you can self-serve check out, which I thought would be good but actually takes longer because you have to juggle all your bits while you scan the items. Typical, I went in there to get a DVD and ended up buying underwear.

Anyway, so I walked up to the Lighthouse Theatre. It has been a long, long time since I walked through campus - it was a little surreal. Had a chat to Robert before the cast call and then Ross turned up and I spoke to him as he had a joint outside. The Revue was better than I expected. There was one cute guy who played "Ian McKellen" who believed he had magnetic powers (I had to explain the joke to Ross as he hadn't seen X-Men) and he was by far the best actor, but there were heaps of good jokes having a dig at various movies, Cityrail, tampon ads and even a sly reference to Law Revue. Robert's parents were there as well. It was weird seeing them because I haven't seen them since I broke up with Robert and that was when they were living on Vancouver Island a few years ago. I miss playing Scrabble with John! Ross and I caught a bus to the city singing Leonard Cohen songs to underdressed teenagers who didn't understand.

On Sunday I was supposed to go grocery shopping and exchange an "access point" that a dimwit Dick Smith employee sold me as a substitute for a router. I went in there the other day and a nice employee told me all about routers. I conferred with Sir about it and she said 'go ahead' so I went back the next day and they'd sold out of the routers the first guy had pointed out. Instead, they had a dimwit and an "access point" - not helpful. Anyway, I didn't go shopping yesterday but today I went in my lunch break only to meet the dimwit again who insisted that the "access point" did the same thing as a router. YES, EXCEPT YOU NEED TO HAVE A ROUTER BEFORE YOU CAN INSTALL AN ACCESS POINT. And what's the point in having both when you can just have a router? Grr! Some dimwits can be so condescending.

Went to soccer on Sunday arvo except it was only Melissa, Sean, Gill and Allyra and I so we kicked around a ball for a bit and then played 2 on 2 with Sean as the goalie for both sides. We got exhausted after 15 minutes and managed to finish the match with a goal awarded to Melissa and I. Everyone went home afterwards. I had invited Stuart over to break up with him for the second time. It wasn't as difficult as I thought - I think he knew it was coming. We used each other and then he was on his way. I didn't even have the awkward situation of having him stay over (I'd told Sir we were 'breaking up' so it would have been weird if he'd stayed over). Nice. Bit too easy. I'm suspicious.

Today just felt really odd from the moment I stepped out. Apart from the dozen half-naked men, getting stuck in the doors of the lift as I entered work, papery daffodils left over from last Friday's Daffodil Day, trying and failing to flirt with the barista's apprentice and the funny gurgly sounds my stomach kept making from 10am, it was a pretty normal day. Not particularly productive. I blame it on the new alignment of the planets now that Pluto has been relegated to 'dwarf planet'. It's planetary apartheid, I tells ya!

Later in the arvo got a phone call from my cousin Alison about the alignment of the cousins - with Cat and Mabs in town this weekend, the four of us form an unlikely quartet. I don't think we've all been in the same room for hmm... 13 years? Still, looking forward to seeing them all. Ali lives in Pyrmont now, which is nice. She also has a car, so will be picking Cat and Mabs up from the airport, which is even nicer. Cat and Mabs are arriving on Thursday at 7:30pm (international) and 8:05pm (domestic) respectively so it works out well. Now, if only I could find the time to write some fiction. Stop blogging, I say. Stop!

Are you 100% sure it wasn't a router with a built-in access-point ;)?

Yes. The instructions stated that the access point first has to be configured to the (as yet non-existent) router.
